El Lenguaje de los aborígenes. Su influencia en el español hablado en la región oriental de Cuba

Abstract

El artículo ofrece una breve panorámica de lo que en la actualidad se conoce sobre las características del lenguaje de los primitivos habitantes de la región oriental de Cuba y su incidencia en el español hablado en dicho territorio. Los autores se apoyan en importantes sucesos históricos y las referencias de algunos investigadores, como lo es el análisis del Diario de Navegación de Cristóbal Colón en su primer viaje a las islas del Caribe en 1492. En particular se valora lo concerniente a la comunicación del almirante con los pobladores de la región. Además se realizó un análisis de los estudios llevados a cabo por historiadores y lingüistas en los documentos referenciados en la bibliografía. Se analiza cómo se realizan los primeros contactos de los colonizadores con los nativos y los resultados de la comunicación con ellos. Finalmente se explican las características de esa lengua y se ejemplifica su influencia y presencia mediante palabras de uso actual. Por la escasa divulgación que ha tenido este tema, lo que falta por investigar y conocer sobre el mismo, y por lo importante de tener una comprensión más clara de las características del español que se habla en esta región, lo que lo diferencia de otras regiones, se precisa de artículos que aborden la temática.

This article offers a brief panoramic view of the present influence of the native inhabitants’ language on the Spanish spoken in the eastern region of Cuba. The article gains support from important historical facts and their reference by some researchers, as it is the case in the analysis of Christopher Columbus’ ship’s log duringhis journey to the Caribbean Islands in 1492; particularly, the analysis of his description s in the communication with them. Also a research study based on the analysis-synthesis of the documents (here reflected in the references) elaborated by specialists on the subject was carried out. The evidences of the first contacts between colonizers and natives are analyzed to evaluate the results of their communication. Finally, the characteristics of the native’s language are explained and examples of the influence and present use of native words in the eastern Cuban Spanish are provided. Since there is little information and publications on this topic and because of the importance of having a better and clearer understanding of the characteristics of the eastern Cuban Spanish, making it different from other regions; it is important to issue articles on the topic.
