El Comercio levantino y chino en la localidad holguinera (1900- 1933)

Abstract

Las relaciones mercantiles de la región de Holguín durante las tres primeras décadas republicanas, han constituido objeto de estudio de la historiografía local, la cual ha revelado sus particularidades bajo la influencia del ciclo económico capitalista propio de ese periodo. Sin embargo, la singularidad de los empresariados chino y levantino en ese contexto ha permanecido silenciado hasta el presente. Su abordaje resulta necesario por cuanto la inmigración asiática constituye parte insoslayable de la nacionalidad cubana en general, y de las comunidades del Nororiente insular en particular. Esta investigación contribuye a sellar esa significativa brecha epistemológica mediante la elucidación de sus dinámicas de emergencia y crecimiento/contención, los giros mercantiles más favorecidos, las figuras más connotadas, las características identitarias de los comerciantes, la influencia del proceso de transculturación en las denominaciones de sus negocios, y los espacios urbanos y rurales en que se ubicaron.

The mercantile relationships of the Holguin region during the first three decades of the republic have been object of study of the local historiography, which has revealed its peculiarities under the influence of the capitalist economic cycle of that period. However, the uniqueness of the Chinese and Levantine entrepreneurs in this context has remained silent to this day. To approach them is necessary because Asian immigration is an unavoidable part of Cuban nationality in general and of the communities of the Northeastern Island in particular. This research contributes to close this significant epistemological gap by elucidating its emergence and growth/containment dynamics, the most favored commercial business, the most connotated figures, the signature characteristics of the merchants, the influence of the process of transculturation on the denominations of their businesses, and the urban and rural spaces in which they were located.
