Criterios considerados en la selección de software libre para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de conceptos de computación gráfica

Abstract

El software profesional se usa ampliamente en las carreras universitarias de ingeniería. Los docentes a menudo deben decidir cuál programa usar entre distintas alternativas. Esa decisión puede basarse en el uso de herramientas de software libre en lugar de software no libre. Ese es el caso de la disciplina Computación Gráfica de la carrera de Ingeniería Informática del Instituto Superior Politécnico de Huambo. En la misma se usaba software no libre para apoyar la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de los conceptos básicos. En este trabajo se sistematizan algunos conceptos y beneficios del software libre, a partir de varias fuentes bibliográficas. También se argumenta cómo se determinaron y aplicaron los criterios para la selección de las herramientas de software libre que sustituyeron los programas no libres en la referida disciplina. Una de las principales conclusiones se relaciona con la necesidad de tener en cuenta en primer lugar criterios didácticos, como la posibilidad de que el software elegido soporte la puesta en práctica de los conceptos teóricos estudiados y la facilidad que brinda la herramienta para el aprendizaje de los mismos. El hecho de que la herramienta sea software libre con licencia gratuita es un criterio fundamental para evitar los gastos de la institución en las mismas, de manera que no se incurran en ilegalidades. Otros criterios también son importantes como: la existencia de una vasta comunidad de usuarios del software, los requisitos de hardware, así como la facilidad de instalación de las herramientas.

Professional software is widely used in the university engineering courses. The university professors often must decide which software to use between different alternatives. That decision can be based on using of free software instead of non-free software. That is the case of the Graphic Computing subject in Computer Engineering course of the Higher Polytechnic Institute of Huambo. In that subject non-free software was used to support the teaching and learning of the basic concepts. In this paper some concepts and benefits of free software are systematized, from several bibliographical sources. Also, it explains how the criteria for the selection of the free software tools were determined and applied that replaced the non-free computer programs in the referred subject. One of the main conclusions is related to the necessity to consider, in the first place, didactic criteria, like the possibility that chosen software that support put into practice the theoretical concepts studied and the facility that the tool offers for the learning. The fact that the tool is free software with a free license without cost is a fundamental criterion to avoid the costs of the institution on the tools, without incurring in illegalities. Other criteria are also important like: the existence of a vast software user’s community, the hardware requirements, as well as the ease of tools installation.
