Periodismo de desastre en el semanario ¡ahora!

Abstract

En los últimos años han aumentado los índices de ocurrencia de catástrofes y su representación en los medios, el hecho se debe al crecimiento de grupos poblacionales en zonas de riesgos. Cuba no está exenta de la incidencia directa e indirecta de estos fenómenos; principalmente ante la inminencia de eventos meteorológicos, tanto periodistas generalistas como especializados han ejercido el Periodismo de Desastre. De tal modo la presente investigación se detiene en el comportamiento del Periodismo de Desastre en el semanario ¡ahora! durante el período comprendido de octubre de 2012 a enero 2013. El estudio se concibe desde una perspectiva fundamentalmente cualitativa y se pretende caracterizar el comportamiento del Periodismo de Desastre en ¡ahora! en dicha etapa. Para lograrlo la investigadora se apoyó de algunos métodos y técnicas de investigación como: el análisis de contenido, y realizó entrevistas a periodistas y directivos del periódico. Los resultados evidenciaron algunas deudas con el desarrollo óptimo de la temática; debido al pobre tratamiento humano y al enfoque de la cobertura desde el desastre, dejando a un lado los temas de percepción del riesgo. La realización de esta investigación aspira a despertar el interés de los periodistas por el tema, con el fin de lograr un mejor desempeño ante tales contingencias.

In recent years the occurrence rates of natural disasters have increased. This is mainly due to the growth of population settlements in risk areas and also the media outreach. Cuba is not exempt from the direct and indirect impact of these phenomena; when facing the impending weather events and natural disasters both generalists and specialized journalists have performed Journalism and Disaster Risk Management. Therefore this research is currently reviewing the behavior of Disaster Journalism in the weekly newspaper !ahora! during the period from October 2012 to January 2013. The study has been conceived primarily from a qualitative perspective and its objective is to characterize the Disaster Journalism in the newspaper !ahora! during this period. To achieve the research’s goals the investigator has been supported by methods and techniques such as content analysis, and conducted interviews with key informants and revising depth of information. The results showed that some aspects can be improved towards the optimal development of this subject, there is a lack of humane focused treatment and instead is centered in the disaster news coverage, leaving aside the issues of risk perception. The completion of this research, aims to attract the interest of journalists on how to treat the subject of natural disasters in order to perform better against such contingencies.
