Influencia de la Iglesia Bautista en la sociedad de San Germán entre 1931-1961

Abstract

La religión en Cuba es un fenómeno social y cultural que no escapa a los estudios históricos, dado su importancia propia y como antesala para otros estudios sociales. Esta investigación se focaliza en revelar el proceso de origen, asentamiento y proyección social de la iglesia Bautista de San Germán, poblado que conformaba la antigua zona holguinera durante la República Burguesa.Teniendo presente que el poblado se vio inmerso en el proceso de modernización estructural de base azucarera experimentado en la Isla a partir de 1899, se analiza el surgimiento de aquella como una consecuencia de dicho proceso. El desarrollo y accionar de la Iglesia Bautista como la primera denominación protestante establecida en el área de estudio, ayudó a definir el rumbo sociocultural del poblado, influenciando directamente no solo en lo religioso, sino en la educación, la cultura y la formación de la identidad del sangermanense.

In Cuba, religion is a cultural and social phenomenon which is not overlooked by historical studies because of to its importance and as the verge for other social studies. This investigation focuses on revealing the process of origin, settlement, and social projection of San German's Baptist Church, a town that belonged to the former Holguin zone during the Bourgeois Republic. Taking into account that this town was involved in the process of sugar-based structural modernization experienced by the island from 1899 on, it is analyzed the beginning of the previously mention institution as a consequence of this process. The development and functioning of this Baptist Church as the first protestant denomination established in the area of study helped define the social course of the town, directly influencing not only in religion, but also in education, culture and the formation of San German's identity.
